For those of us who are aware of the issues that
threaten people, animals, and our planet itself – such as
sweatshops, child labor, slavery, war, poverty, oppressive governments,
overconsumption, habitat destruction, inefficient use of non-renewable
resources, and industrialized agriculture – parenthood poses
a unique set of challenges. Many people agree that these and other
issues must be addressed in the near future if most humans are
to maintain security and quality of life, but they can seem large
and impossible to change, particularly in light of the busy lives
we lead as parents. On the other hand, we have a very real and
personal stake in seeing that these problems get solved for the
sake of our children and their children. Humane Parenting gives
us some easy-to-implement ideas for ways we can help find everyday
solutions to these dilemmas…

If….? When the Going Gets Tough, AP Gets Going in the Spring

My grandmother is a woman whose true avocation is mothering. She
raised her brothers and sisters, several foster children, her
own four boys, and then raised my sister and me. These days, she
doesn’t have as much energy as she used to, but she still
loves to spend time with her great-grandchildren. I think if she
was having her children today she would practice attachment parenting.
She was always very loving and respectful towards children, in
a time where “spare the rod, spoil the child” was
commonplace.
